Manchester United Prepare to Rival Liverpool Sign £84m Bundesliga Top Class Midfielder in January

According to a report by TeamTalk on Monday, October 19, 2026, Manchester United are prepared to challenge Liverpool in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, who has attracted attention from several major Premier League clubs.

United are reportedly continuing to track the Germany international and have already made contact as they evaluate possible additions to their midfield ahead of the January transfer window.

Liverpool are also keeping tabs on the 26-year-old as they explore alternative options in case they fail to secure Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be monitoring Nmecha as well, while Manchester City, Arsenal and Newcastle United have previously been linked with the player.

A return to England could appeal to Nmecha because of his previous experience in the country. Born in Hamburg, the midfielder spent more than a decade in Manchester City’s academy before continuing his professional development in Germany with Wolfsburg and later Borussia Dortmund.

His performances at club level and for the German national team have strengthened his reputation as a dynamic central midfielder who can contribute in both defensive and attacking phases of the game.

Nevertheless, convincing Dortmund to part with him is expected to be difficult. The Bundesliga side regard Nmecha as an important member of their squad, and his current contract runs until June 2030. He has also remained a regular under head coach Niko Kovač.

Dortmund are in a strong position to determine his future, with reports suggesting that the midfielder does not have a release clause that could be activated during the January window. An €80 million clause is reportedly set to become available in the summer of 2027.

Until then, the German club are understood to value Nmecha at between €90 million and €100 million, equivalent to approximately £84 million at the upper end of that valuation.

Dortmund sporting director Ole Book has also previously played down the prospect of the midfielder leaving, describing an exit as highly unlikely.

Given Nmecha’s long-term contract and importance to the team, Dortmund have little incentive to sanction his departure midway through the season.

Manchester United and Liverpool may therefore need to remain patient if they intend to pursue the midfielder, with a potential move after the current campaign appearing more realistic than a January transfer.
