The 2026-27 Ghana Premier League has produced an entertaining opening season, with home teams dominating the opening seven matchdays, winning 41 of the 63 matches played as the competition produced 137 goals.

The home sides have accounted for nearly 65 per cent of all victories and the early statistics underline the difficulty of winning on the road, while Medeama SC, Hearts of Oak and FC Samartex 1996 lead the title race on 14 points each.

With an average of approximately 2.17 goals per match, the opening phase has offered a reasonable return in front of goal, while the results underline the importance of making home fixtures count in a competition where every point could prove decisive.

Of the 63 matches played, home teams have secured 41 victories, representing approximately 65 per cent of all games. Away sides have managed just nine wins, while 13 matches have ended in draws, further illustrating the challenge visiting clubs face across the division.

The dominance of home teams is also reflected in the scoring figures. Home sides have accounted for 93 of the 137 goals recorded, leaving visiting teams with 44. The difference of 49 goals underlines how much more productive clubs have been on familiar territory during the opening weeks.

The distribution of goals across both halves has been remarkably balanced. First halves have produced 68 goals, while the second halves have yielded 69, suggesting that scoring opportunities have been spread throughout matches rather than concentrated in one period.

At the summit of the standings, Medeama SC, Hearts of Oak and FC Samartex 1996 are level on 14 points, with Medeama occupying top spot on goal difference. Aduana FC are close behind on 13 points, while Basake Holy Stars FC have accumulated 12 points to complete the leading five.

At the opposite end, Dreams FC have endured a difficult start, collecting only three points from their opening seven matches and sitting bottom of the standings. Vision FC and Young Apostles complete the set in the relegation zone with six points each.

However, with the season still in its early stages, there remains considerable time for clubs to improve their positions and reshape the standings.

Basake Holy Stars have established themselves as the league’s most successful team on home soil, winning all four matches in front of their supporters. Their record is unmatched after seven matchdays and has contributed to their impressive position among the division’s leading clubs.

Eight other teams have recorded three home victories each. They are Bechem United, FC AshantiGold 04, Karela United, Medeama SC, Asante Kotoko, Aduana FC, FC Samartex 1996 and Swedru All Blacks.

Hearts of Oak complete the leading group with two home wins, highlighting the importance of their performances at their adopted University of Ghana Stadium home venue as they seek to maintain their challenge near the top of the table.

Basake’s record offers a clear example of how consistent home results can provide a foundation for a strong league campaign. Nevertheless, the challenge for the leading sides will be to sustain that form while improving their results away from home.

Winning on the road has been a major challenge for most clubs, with only eight teams managing an away victory after seven rounds of matches.

Hearts of Oak lead the away-wins ranking with two victories, demonstrating an ability to collect important points beyond their home fixtures. In a competition where home teams have won more than three-fifths of all matches, that record gives the Phobians a valuable advantage.

The scarcity of away victories also highlights the competitive demands of the league. Clubs that can consistently avoid defeat on their travels, even when wins prove difficult to secure, could gain a significant advantage over rivals across the remainder of the season.

For the teams chasing the leading trio, improving their away form may be just as important as maintaining their home performances.

The race for the league’s leading scorer is currently headed by Stephen Amankona of Aduana FC and Kingsley Braye of Medeama SC, who have both scored four goals after seven matchdays.

FC AshantiGold 04’s David Gyamfi Junior, Abdul Razak Salifu of Dreams FC and Gold Stars SC’s Kwame Opoku are close behind with three goals apiece.

The early scoring rankings suggest that the battle for the goal king race remains wide open. With the campaign still at an early stage, the leading scorers will be looking to build on their starts as their clubs pursue their respective ambitions.

In the goalkeeping department, Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare leads the clean-sheet standings with five shutouts.

Micheal Appiah of Swedru All Blacks follows with four, while Benjamin Kwesi Asiedu of Bechem United and Prince Osei of Aduana FC have recorded three each. Musah Zakari of Samartex has two clean sheets.

Asare’s tally is particularly notable given the importance of defensive consistency in a league where home victories have been so prevalent.

His record has helped Hearts remain among the leading contenders after seven rounds. His 5 cleansheets comes from six games he has played, conceding just once across the campaign.

Bechem United’s Augustine Okrah and Medeama SC’s Emmanuel Annor are the leading providers in the league, with four assists each.

Their contributions have placed them ahead of a group of players who have registered two assists apiece. That group includes Victor Abdul Rahman of Vision FC, Meshack Adjetey Sowah and Prince Owusu of Medeama, and Emmanuel Sanja of Asante Kotoko, alongside four other players.

The rankings underline the importance of creativity in the early stages of the campaign. While goals attract much of the attention, the ability to create scoring opportunities has also been central to several clubs’ attacking performances.

Medeama’s representation among the leading assist providers is another indication of the club’s strong start, with its players contributing both in front of goal and in the build-up to scoring opportunities.

Disciplinary figures from the opening 63 matches show that referees have issued 228 yellow cards and 14 red cards. Of the dismissals, 12 have resulted from second yellow cards, while only two have been direct red cards.

Heart of Lions and FC AshantiGold 04 have each received three red cards, the highest totals recorded by any team. Dreams FC follow with two dismissals.

The penalty statistics show that 16 spot-kicks have been awarded, with 13 converted and three missed. Only one own goal has been recorded across the seven matchdays, making such incidents relatively uncommon in the opening phase of the season.

These figures offer another dimension to the campaign, highlighting the disciplinary demands on players and the importance of taking advantage of opportunities from the penalty spot.

As the Ghana Premier League moves beyond matchday seven, the early statistics point to a competition in which home form remains a decisive factor, but individual quality and consistency could ultimately determine the direction of the title race.

Medeama, Hearts of Oak and Samartex have set the early pace, while Aduana and Basake remain within touching distance. For the chasing pack, better away results could prove essential, while Dreams FC and the other struggling sides must find ways to turn their performances into points.

Although the numbers provide a useful picture of the opening weeks, the standings remain fluid. The coming rounds will reveal whether the leading clubs can sustain their momentum and whether the league’s early home dominance will continue to define the season.
