Orengo Break His Silence After Mama Ida Odinga Was Attacked in Bondo During Raila 1st Anniversary
Siaya Governor James Orengo has attracted attention following the controversy surrounding the first anniversary of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which was marked by political tension and reports of confrontations in Bondo.
The anniversary, held on October 15, 2026, at Migwena Cultural and Sports Grounds, brought together family members, political leaders and supporters who gathered to honour Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s political development.
However, the occasion was overshadowed by reports of heckling and disruptions involving some of the leaders who attended the memorial. The incidents triggered widespread debate over the conduct of political supporters and the growing divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Orengo has previously raised concerns about political interference during the preparations for the memorial. He urged leaders to maintain peace and respect the significance of the occasion, warning against turning the gathering into a platform for political confrontation.
The controversy has also drawn attention to the treatment of Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga, who expressed disappointment over the behaviour witnessed during the event.
Ida subsequently called for respect among political leaders and apologised to guests who experienced hostility during the commemoration. Her remarks highlighted the need to preserve the dignity of an occasion intended to celebrate her late husband’s legacy.
The incident comes amid increasing disagreements within ODM, with different factions taking contrasting positions on the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino have emerged as prominent figures associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has attracted attention for its criticism of established political leadership.
Orengo’s political position has also placed him at the centre of discussions about the future of Raila’s political movement.
As reactions to the anniversary continue, the unfolding debate has renewed calls for political tolerance, unity and respect for the Odinga family.
The developments are likely to intensify discussions about ODM’s internal divisions and the future of Raila’s political legacy as Kenya approaches another election cycle.
