Senator John Methu Asks Kenyans to Advise Him Whether He Should Finally Shave His Hair
Nyandarua Senator John Methu has invited Kenyans to weigh in on whether he should shave his trademark long hair or maintain his distinctive rugged appearance, following comments from people who believe his current hairstyle does not suit him.
Speaking in Kahawa West, Nairobi, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Methu acknowledged that some individuals had criticised his grooming and expressed uncertainty about whether he should change his look. He subsequently turned to the public for advice on the matter.
“There are people saying my hair does not look good. Should I shave it or not?” Methu said.
The senator’s hairstyle has attracted attention beyond personal grooming, having become closely associated with his political stance and public identity. In June 2024, he announced that he would stop visiting the barber as a protest against the political impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Methu presented his decision to grow his hair as an expression of resistance, drawing comparisons between his growing afro and the historical struggle of the Mau Mau freedom fighters, who played a significant role in Kenya’s fight for independence.
His decision to maintain the hairstyle therefore developed into more than a personal fashion statement, with the senator using it to communicate his dissatisfaction with political developments affecting his allies.
Despite his determination to retain the look, Methu has previously acknowledged facing pressure from his wife to change his appearance. Her concerns, however, did not appear to have persuaded him to abandon his commitment to the hairstyle.
The senator had also linked his decision to the political direction of the Mount Kenya region, previously declaring that he would continue growing his hair until the region moved away from its political alignment with President William Ruto.
His latest remarks suggest that he is now reconsidering whether to maintain the distinctive appearance that has become part of his public image. By asking Kenyans to offer their opinions, Methu has placed the decision before the public, potentially turning an ordinary grooming question into another topic of political discussion.
It remains unclear whether the senator will eventually shave his hair or continue with the style he adopted as a form of political protest. For now, his question has invited Kenyans to share their views on an appearance that has become closely associated with his political journey.
