Kalonzo Sends Powerful Mashujaa Day Message, Names Struggling Kenyans the Country’s True Heroes

Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has paid tribute to ordinary Kenyans battling economic hardships, describing their resilience and determination as the true definition of heroism as the country marks Mashujaa Day.

In a message dated October 19, 2026, titled “We Have Not Arrived But We Have Not Turned Back,” Kalonzo shifted the focus from celebrated historical figures to millions of citizens whose everyday sacrifices continue to sustain the nation.

The veteran opposition leader acknowledged the contributions of Kenya’s historical heroes, including Mekatilili wa Menza, Dedan Kimathi and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, whose struggles helped shape the country’s political history.

However, he argued that heroism should not be confined to those remembered in history books, monuments and street names, noting that ordinary citizens also demonstrate extraordinary courage through their daily struggles.

Kalonzo highlighted the difficulties facing workers and small-scale traders, painting a picture of a nurse working amid salary uncertainty, a boda boda rider struggling with loan repayments and a mama mboga extending credit to a neighbour despite facing rent arrears.

Through these examples, he sought to recognise the sacrifices of Kenyans who continue working hard to support their families despite mounting financial pressure.

He also paid tribute to young people who have taken to the streets to demand accountability and respect for the Constitution, describing their determination to seek change despite exhaustion and frustration as a powerful expression of national courage.

Beyond celebrating the country’s everyday heroes, Kalonzo used his Mashujaa Day message to encourage Kenyans to participate actively in shaping the nation’s political future.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, he urged young people turning 18 to acquire national identity cards and register as voters.

He maintained that participating in elections provides citizens with an important opportunity to influence leadership and determine the direction the country takes.

According to Kalonzo, voting for the Kenya citizens want to inherit is an act of heroism that every eligible voter can perform.

His remarks placed democratic participation at the centre of his message, presenting the ballot as a peaceful means through which Kenyans can demand accountability and pursue political change.

Kalonzo also adopted a firm stance on constitutional matters, pledging to defend the 2010 Constitution through the courts against what he described as a “predator regime.”

Invoking the late Raila Odinga’s promise of a better future, often associated with the idea of reaching Canaan, he insisted that the journey towards a better Kenya remains unfinished.

Signing off as Principal of the United Alternative Government-in-Waiting, Kalonzo delivered a message combining national remembrance with political mobilisation ahead of the next election.

His central message was that Kenya’s true heroes include citizens who continue working, demanding accountability and believing in a better future despite adversity.

He concluded with a patriotic declaration: “Heri ya Mashujaa, Kenya. Together we shall Komb oa Kenya.”
