KCSE 2026 Timetable Rules Every Candidate Needs to Know Before Entering the Exam Room
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has outlined strict rules governing late arrival for candidates sitting the 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, warning that arriving after a paper begins does not guarantee admission.
According to the examination guidelines, candidates who arrive late must provide a satisfactory explanation to the examination supervisor. Those who report more than 30 minutes after the scheduled start of a paper may only be allowed to sit the examination under exceptional circumstances.
The 30-minute mark is not an official grace period that allows candidates to arrive late without consequences. Even candidates who arrive within the first half-hour are required to explain their delay, while those who arrive later face stricter admission conditions.
KNEC has advised candidates who experience unexpected delays to report to the supervisor immediately upon reaching the examination centre and explain the circumstances surrounding their late arrival.
The council has also emphasised the importance of arriving early enough to complete security checks before entering the examination room.
Under the 2026 guidelines, candidates are required to be seated at their desks 15 minutes before the scheduled beginning of each paper. This means those sitting an examination scheduled for 8am should be seated by 7.45am, while candidates taking a 2pm paper should be in their places by 1.45pm.
Candidates are therefore expected to plan their journeys to examination centres carefully rather than aim to arrive just before the paper begins.
The official timetable indicates that most morning-session papers begin at 8am, while afternoon papers start at 2pm. However, candidates have been advised to check the schedule for their specific subjects because oral examinations, practical papers and other assessments may have different arrangements.
KNEC has further stated that the time allocated to each paper must be observed. Where the examination timetable differs from the time indicated on the question paper, the time printed on the question paper takes precedence.
Late arrival also does not entitle a candidate to extra examination time. Even where a supervisor allows a candidate who arrived late to sit a paper under exceptional circumstances, the candidate must complete the examination within the prescribed duration.
The council has also prohibited candidates from carrying wristwatches into examination rooms. The restriction covers analogue watches, digital watches and smartwatches, alongside other prohibited items such as mobile phones and programmable calculators.
Candidates are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the examination instructions, confirm their centres and make arrangements to arrive well before the scheduled starting time to avoid complications during the national examinations.
