Asantehene Endorses Mahama’s Plan to Transform Ghana’s Mineral Wealth Into Economic Gains

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has thrown his support behind President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda, describing the government’s efforts to promote local processing and value addition in the mining sector as essential to Ghana’s economic transformation.

He maintained that the policy direction, which seeks to reduce the country’s dependence on exporting raw minerals by expanding domestic processing, remains important despite the controversies surrounding the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene at the Mining in Motion Conference on Monday, October 19, Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama, the Essumejahene, said the government’s approach to mineral governance could help Ghana tackle poverty by retaining more economic value from its natural resources.

He noted that President Mahama’s reset agenda, introduced shortly after he assumed office, places greater emphasis on national control over mineral wealth and the development of local processing capacity.

According to him, the focus on transforming raw minerals into finished or semi-finished products within Ghana reflects a long-standing national ambition to use natural resources as a catalyst for industrialisation and economic growth.

Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama also drew parallels between the current policy direction and the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who sought to harness the country’s mineral wealth and establish a gold refinery in Tarkwa.

He argued that, notwithstanding the concerns surrounding GoldBod, the broader objective of the government’s reset agenda remains consistent with the founding vision of using Ghana’s natural resources to advance national development.

He added that the current mineral policy framework presents an opportunity for Ghana to build on that legacy by expanding local value addition, strengthening domestic processing industries and ensuring that a greater proportion of the wealth generated from its mineral resources benefits the country.
