NDC Has Spent 90Million On The 24-Hour Economy Yet Ghanaians Are Still Waiting For Tangible Results

A member of the New Patriotic Party communications team, Issah Mohammed, has questioned the impact of the government’s 24-hour economy policy, saying GH¢90 million has been spent with little to show for it.Starr FM graphic (14 October 2026); related comments by Issah Mohammed and budget details reported on Ghanamma.com and other outlets.

According to Mohammed, the NDC administration has allocated and spent GH¢90 million on the flagship programme, yet Ghanaians are still waiting to see tangible results.

He noted that while the government told Parliament GH¢110 million was allocated for the 24-hour economy in the 2026 budget, the appendix showed GH¢90 million actually provided. Of that amount, GH¢70 million was for goods and services and GH¢20 million for capital expenditure.

The 24-hour economy was presented as a major job-creation initiative during the 2024 campaign, with a promise to create 1.7 million decent jobs by the end of 2028 through businesses operating in shifts.

Mohammed argued that factories are not running night shifts in significant numbers, shops continue to close early, and many young people remain unemployed. Traders in major markets have also said they have not felt any meaningful change under the policy.

Opposition figures have repeatedly called for clear evidence of jobs created, including SSNIT records and verifiable employment data. The government has previously pointed to some filling stations and manufacturers operating extended hours, as well as agreements expected to generate jobs.

Critics, including Mohammed, maintain that the scale of results so far does not match the resources committed or the promises made. The comments form part of ongoing political scrutiny of the administration’s economic programmes as the country moves further into its term.

The debate over the 24-hour economy continues to feature in public discussions about job creation and the effective use of public funds.
