Court Convicts Waititu’s Wife Susan Wangari of Money Laundering After Overturning Acquittal

Susan Wangari, the wife of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, has been ordered to remain at Lang’ata Women’s GK Prison after the High Court overturned her acquittal in a money laundering case. Justice Rose Ougo issued the directive on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after finding that the lower court had erred in clearing her and other accused persons of the charge.

The ruling followed an appeal by the State challenging the earlier decision by the lower court to acquit Wangari, her husband and their co-accused. The judge allowed the State’s cross-appeal and set aside the acquittals relating to the money laundering charges, paving the way for convictions.

Those affected by the ruling include Waititu, Charles Chege and Luka Mwangi Wahinya, alongside Wangari. Justice Ougo directed that the matter be returned to the Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate’s Court for mitigation and sentencing, explaining that the High Court was not exercising original sentencing jurisdiction over the counts in question.

Following the decision, Wangari was ordered to remain in custody until Monday, October 19, 2026, when the accused persons are expected to appear before Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa. The court will hear mitigation submissions before determining the appropriate sentences for the money laundering offences.

The case has drawn attention because the High Court’s decision reverses an earlier outcome that had favoured the accused persons. By setting aside the acquittals, the court has changed the legal position of Wangari and the others on the specific charges under appeal.

The next proceedings will focus on mitigation and sentencing, with the accused persons expected to present factors they wish the court to consider before penalties are determined. The matter is scheduled to return to the lower court on October 19, 2026, as the legal process moves to the next stage following the High Court ruling.
