“He’s someone I really appreciate” – Rafael Leao backs Barcelona star to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or
According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 14, 2026, Galatasaray star Rafael Leão has backed Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, praising the teenager’s exceptional ability and personality.
Speaking to TNT Sports Brasil, Leão expressed his admiration for the Spanish international and said he hopes Yamal wins football’s prestigious individual award alongside more major trophies with Barcelona.
“I hope Lamine Yamal wins the Ballon d’Or and major titles with Barça. He is among the best players in the world. He’s someone I really appreciate as a player and person, and he is surrounded by good players at an extraordinary club,” Leão said.
Yamal has continued to attract attention with his performances for Barcelona. He reportedly provided two assists in the club’s 4-1 Champions League victory over Galatasaray, despite failing to get on the scoresheet.
The youngster also played an important role in Barcelona’s reported La Liga and Supercopa de España triumphs last season, strengthening his case among the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or.
Yamal has previously argued that the award should recognise more than just goals, pointing to the creativity and magic that make certain players special to watch.
However, the Barcelona forward faces competition from several elite players, including Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane.
Leão’s endorsement adds to the debate surrounding this year’s award, although the final outcome will depend on the voters’ assessment of the candidates’ performances and achievements during the relevant period.
