Emelia Agbenyo’s appointment as Deputy EC Chair worse than Jean Mensa’s – Nana B
The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Second Vice Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, has reiterated the party’s rejection of Emelia Agbenyo’s appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), raising concerns about the Commission’s impartiality.
Speaking on GhanAkoma on Akoma FM, hosted by Sir John, Nana B said President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Agbenyo was even more questionable, given his previous criticisms of the NPP over the appointment of Jean Mensa as EC Chairperson.
“If President Mahama criticised the NPP over Jean Mensa’s appointment in the past, then his appointment of Emelia Agbenyo is even worse,” he said.
Nana B accused the President of taking Ghanaians for granted by appointing someone he described as an NDC activist to serve at the Electoral Commission.
He disclosed that the NPP’s National Steering Committee would meet to deliberate on the matter and determine the party’s next steps.
“We will hold a National Steering Committee meeting today to deliberate on the matter and take further decisions regarding her appointment. However, let it be clearly stated that we reject Emelia’s appointment,” he stated.
Despite the party’s opposition, Nana B maintained that the NPP’s fortunes in the 2028 general elections would depend on its own efforts rather than the composition of the Electoral Commission’s leadership.
“In the 2028 elections, our destiny is in our own hands, and the appointment of the Deputy EC Chairperson will have no impact on the outcome,” he said.
The comments follow the swearing-in of two Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission. The NPP had also issued a statement on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, rejecting the appointments.
