14-Year-Old JHS Student Dies After Allegedly Setting Herself Ablaze in Eastern Region

A 14-year-old Junior High School student has died from severe burns after allegedly setting herself on fire at Mpraeso Amanfrom in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The deceased, Keziah Mirekua, was a final-year student at Mpraeso Amanfrom Basic School. She reportedly poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze at a school park in the community at about 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

Following the incident, she was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw for emergency medical attention before being referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where she subsequently died.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, with conflicting accounts from members of the deceased’s family regarding an alleged pregnancy and its possible connection to the tragedy.

Keziah’s grandmother, Christiana Nkansah, told local reporter Osofoba Enoch that the family had received information suggesting that the incident might have followed a disagreement involving a young man who allegedly denied responsibility for the reported pregnancy.

According to the grandmother, the teenager made certain disclosures while receiving treatment before her death.

However, Keziah’s mother and sister have disputed the pregnancy allegation.

Although they acknowledged that she was in a relationship with a young man, they maintained that she was not pregnant and suggested that other circumstances might have contributed to the incident.

The two family members have called for a thorough investigation to establish the events that preceded the teenager’s death and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The conflicting accounts have left key questions unanswered, particularly regarding the alleged pregnancy and the reported disagreement.
