Michael Carrick Sack Timeline Revealed as Decisive Phase Begins at Man Utd
According to a report by TeamTalk on Wednesday October 14, 2026, Michael Carrick reportedly has three matches to convince Manchester United’s hierarchy that he remains the right person to lead the club, with pressure increasing following another disappointing performance against Atletico Madrid.
United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat extended their poor run to just one victory in seven matches across all competitions, intensifying concerns about their results and performances under the English manager.
During that period, United lost the Manchester derby against ten men, suffered elimination from the Carabao Cup against Brighton and drew 1-1 with Tottenham despite Rodrigo Bentancur receiving a red card.
The team’s problems extend beyond results, with defensive errors, midfield struggles and ineffective pressing leaving supporters increasingly frustrated. Their performances have raised serious questions about Carrick’s ability to turn the situation around.
Italian journalist Nico Schira reported on X that United’s board were unhappy with recent displays, identifying the upcoming fixtures against Leeds United, Como and Bournemouth as decisive for Carrick’s future.
Those matches could prove challenging. Leeds have shown encouraging form, Como are developing under Cesc Fabregas, while Bournemouth possess players capable of troubling established Premier League sides.
Meanwhile, Antonio Conte has emerged as a possible replacement, with reports in Italy suggesting discussions could be developing. Fabrizio Romano, however, indicated United had not contacted alternative managers regarding an immediate appointment.
Romano explained that Carrick still has the club’s backing for now, although results must improve quickly. He warned that continued struggles could make the manager’s position increasingly vulnerable during the coming weeks.
He said: “Manchester United need to change their results as soon as possible,” stressing that the situation could become serious if performances fail to improve. The club will closely monitor upcoming matches.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has also been mentioned as a potential candidate should United dismiss Carrick. Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly favours building a strong British core, making Howe a possible option.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is another manager said to have impressed United officials. Romano also suggested Conte would consider joining a major club midway through a season, potentially increasing his appeal if Carrick departs.
