YAMIL LAGE | AFP via Getty Images Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on Pocket America’s Poison Centers logged 862 exposures to retatrutide in the three months ending in September, up from 460 in the prior three months and 249 in the first three months of 2026, CBS News reported. The FDA has also received two reports of people who died after taking products sold as retatrutide, an experimental Eli Lilly obesity drug that no regulator has approved.
Whether the drug caused either death has not been established. The reports were filed through the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System, and the agency declined to say whether it had verified them. CBS said it could not independently verify the reports either. Still, the figures raise a pressing question for adults buying injectable “peptides” online, often through wellness sites, med spas, or social media links, without a prescription or medical oversight.
The first report, filed in July by a health care professional, describes a 41-year-old woman with obesity who went into cardiac arrest after using retatrutide obtained from an unreliable source. She arrived at a hospital with a dangerously fast heartbeat and died after repeated attempts to resuscitate her failed. The report noted that she had also been drinking kava, a plant-based relaxant.
The second, received in September, describes a 49-year-old patient who died after severe dehydration, malnutrition, and cardiac arrest. According to the report, a nurse recommended the drug, sold her vials from an online peptide vendor, and gave her dosing recommendations. A vial pictured in the report carried the name of a peptide seller. An attorney for that company said there was not enough information to link it to the product and that the vial did not match its current packaging. “A licensed healthcare professional should never recommend research-use-only products to a patient,” the attorney added.
Adverse event reports are early warning signals, not proof. Anyone can file one, details are often incomplete, and the FDA redacted identifying information in the copies CBS obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. Neither death was connected to a clinical trial, according to the documents and Lilly.
Pieter Cohen, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, told CBS, “It is concerning because of the breakdown of our drug-approval process in the United States of America.” He said the FDA should obtain and test the products the patients injected. The FDA said it reviews adverse event reports and gathers more information when needed, but it generally does not discuss potential or ongoing compliance matters.
The retatrutide studied by Lilly is not the same as what is sold online. In the phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 trial of 2,339 adults, participants on the highest dose lost an average of 28.3% of their body weight over 80 weeks under medical supervision, Lilly reported in its trial announcement. Participants in that trial were screened, started at lower doses, and were monitored regularly.
Those results come from company-funded research, and regulators have not yet reviewed the drug. Lilly says authentic retatrutide is available only through its clinical trials and a limited expanded access program, and it plans to submit the drug to the FDA in early 2027, Becker’s Hospital Review reported. The company has referred more than 200 people and businesses to regulators, law enforcement, and licensing boards.
Lilly told CBS that suspect products it tested contained too much, too little, or the wrong active ingredient, along with contaminants. In August, Lilly sued six companies over alleged retatrutide sales, accusing them of using “research use only” labels while selling the products to people for injection. Those allegations have not been decided in court.
A June Public Citizen investigation found that the FDA had sent 14 warning letters to companies selling retatrutide since 2024, yet eight of those companies were still selling it as of May. The consumer advocacy group also counted 14 reported hospitalizations tied to retatrutide in the FDA’s adverse event system and described hundreds of influencers acting as sales affiliates. “The era of snake oil and quack medicine is back,” said Peter Whoriskey, research director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group.
In Lilly’s trial, the most common side effects at the highest dose were gastrointestinal, including nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting. Severe vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dangerous fluid loss. Products of unknown strength make those risks harder to predict; contaminated vials can carry infection risks of their own, and people injecting without a clinician have no one monitoring how they respond. Sharing vials or reusing needles adds further danger.
Anyone who has used a gray-market product should tell a clinician and keep the vial and packaging. Questions about a possible reaction can go to Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222, which connects callers to America’s Poison Centers. Chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat, nonstop vomiting, severe belly pain, or signs of dehydration need emergency care right away.
People should not stop or change prescribed medications without medical advice. Cost often drives gray-market buying, so patients can ask a clinician about FDA-approved weight-loss drugs, insurance coverage, prior authorization appeals, and manufacturer savings programs. Patients and clinicians can report suspected reactions through FDA MedWatch.
Lilly’s FDA submission, any agency review of the death reports, and the next quarterly poison center tally will show whether the trend is slowing. Until then, the tested drug remains promising, and the products sold online remain unverified. MedicalDaily will continue monitoring both.
What is retatrutide? Retatrutide is an experimental injectable obesity drug developed by Eli Lilly. No regulator has approved it, and authentic retatrutide is available only through Lilly’s clinical trials and a limited expanded access program.
Did retatrutide cause the two deaths? That has not been established. The reports were submitted to an FDA database that collects unverified safety signals, and the agency has not said whether it confirmed the details.
How fast are poison center exposures rising? Poison centers logged 862 exposures from July through September, compared with 460 in the prior three months and 249 in the first three months of 2026.
Is it legal to buy retatrutide online? No retatrutide product is approved for human use. Sellers often label vials “research use only,” which Lilly argues in court is a cover for sales to consumers.
What symptoms need urgent care? Seek emergency care for chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat, severe or nonstop vomiting, intense belly pain, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and very little urine.
Where can I get help if I used a gray-market product? Call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 and speak with a clinician. Keep the vial and packaging so the product can be identified if needed.
