Keffe D Sentenced to 40 Years to Life for Tupac Shakur’s Murder

Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for his role in the 1996 murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, bringing a major development in one of the most closely followed murder cases in hip-hop history.

The 63-year-old former gang leader received the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in a Las Vegas court, nearly 30 years after Tupac was fatally shot in a drive-by attack. Davis was convicted of first-degree murder in August 2026 following a trial that revisited the circumstances surrounding the rapper’s death.

Tupac, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a black BMW with Death Row Records founder Suge Knight in Las Vegas. The shooting occurred after a confrontation involving members of Davis’s circle and Tupac’s entourage earlier that evening.

The rapper sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital, where he died six days later, on September 13, 1996. He was 25 years old at the time of his death.

Prosecutors argued that Davis helped organise the attack as an act of retaliation following an earlier altercation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson. According to the prosecution, Davis obtained a firearm and handed it to associates who were inside a white Cadillac from which the shots were fired.

Although Davis was not identified as the gunman, prosecutors maintained that he played a central role in planning the attack. His own public statements about the incident, including accounts discussed in interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, became important elements of the case.

The murder remained unsolved for decades before investigators renewed their efforts and Davis was arrested in September 2023. He was the only person charged in connection with Tupac’s killing.

During the sentencing hearing, members of Tupac’s family addressed the court, describing the lasting pain caused by the rapper’s death. His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, and stepbrother, Maurice “Mopreme” Shakur, were among the family members who spoke about their loss.
