Rashid Tanko accuses NPP of double standards over Afi Agbenyo’s appointment

NDC Director of Elections Rashid Tanko Computer has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of double standards in its criticism of Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s appointment as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, citing the political backgrounds of people appointed to similar positions under the previous administration.

Speaking on Joy News, Mr Tanko questioned why the NPP was challenging Ms Agbenyo’s appointment when it had not raised similar objections to appointments made during its time in government.

He cited Dr Appiahene, whom he described as a former NPP director of elections, and referred to other individuals he claimed had held positions within the party before their appointments to the Electoral Commission.

“I’m saying that, why are we talking about this matter now when they appointed Dr Appiahene at that time?” he asked.

Mr Tanko argued that the NPP should compare the appointees’ credentials and professional experience instead of focusing on alleged political affiliations.

He also said the NDC had deliberately selected someone who was not known for being confrontational.

“Interestingly enough, we brought in somebody who is so liberal. A lady who is not known to be confrontational,” he said.

He further disputed the suggestion that Ms Agbenyo’s appointment meant the NDC was seeking to dominate the Electoral Commission, arguing that the party was not attempting to replicate what it believed happened under the previous administration.

“We do not come in to create a situation where it will look like we are also going to pack it,” he said.

Mr Tanko’s defence focused on what he described as inconsistencies in the NPP’s objections to political affiliations among Electoral Commission appointees.
