WHO reassures Kenyans after imported Ebola case, says no outbreak evidence

Ebola virus and WHO logo/HANDOUTThe World Health Organization (WHO) has reassured Kenyans that there is no evidence of an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the country following the confirmation of one imported case.

Dr Martins Chibueze, WHO Kenya’s Head of Health Emergencies, said health authorities were monitoring people who had been in contact with the confirmed case and strengthening surveillance to prevent further transmission.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak programme on Wednesday, Chibueze said individuals who had developed symptoms and undergone testing had returned negative results.

“There’s no evidence of an ongoing Ebola outbreak in Kenya following the confirmation of one imported case,” he said.

Chibueze emphasised the importance of contact tracing and monitoring in detecting and responding to any potential spread of the virus.

WHO is working closely with the Kenyan government to strengthen surveillance systems and coordinate the response following the confirmation of the imported case.

The collaboration is aimed at helping health authorities identify potential cases early, monitor exposed individuals and implement appropriate public health measures.

The confirmation of the imported case has raised concerns about the risk of transmission, prompting health authorities to maintain vigilance as they monitor the situation.

While the negative test results among symptomatic individuals offer reassurance, continued surveillance remains important in detecting any further infections.

Contact tracing is a key part of Ebola preparedness, allowing health authorities to identify people who may have been exposed to the virus and respond promptly if new cases emerge.

WHO’s engagement with the government is expected to support coordinated preparedness and response efforts as monitoring continues.

Members of the public have been encouraged to rely on official updates from the Ministry of Health and WHO for accurate information on the country’s Ebola response.

Authorities have also emphasised vigilance and the timely reporting of suspected cases as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.
