Dangote Refinery Swings To $4.7bn Profit, Revenue Soars 144% To $22.5bn

LAGOS – Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has recorded a dramatic financial turnaround, posting a net profit of $4.73 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, against a loss of $117.2 million in the corresponding period of 2025, as revenue surged by 144 percent to $22.5 billion.

The performance marks a major milestone for Africa’s largest refinery, which has moved from a loss-making operation into a highly profitable industrial enterprise, strengthening its financial position at a critical time when it is seeking to broaden ownership through a landmark Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The company’s unaudited financial results, released in Lagos on Tuesday, showed that revenue rose from $9.2 billion in the first nine months of 2025 to $22.48 billion in the period under review, reflecting increased refining throughput, improved operational reliability and stronger refining margins.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) climbed nearly ninefold to $5.52 billion from $627.6 million, while the EBITDA margin expanded significantly to 24.56 percent from 6.83 percent a year earlier.

Operating cash flow also surged more than tenfold to $3.68 billion, compared with $364.7 million in the corresponding period of 2025, underscoring the refinery’s growing capacity to convert its operations into cash-generating earnings.

The strong cash generation translated into a substantial improvement in the company’s balance sheet. Cash balances rose to $6.69 billion as of September 2026, from $809.5 million a year earlier, while its financial position swung from net debt of $1.73 billion to net cash of $650.8 million.

The shift into a net cash position signals a significant strengthening of the refinery’s financial flexibility, potentially providing greater capacity to fund expansion, support working capital requirements and withstand volatility in international crude oil prices and refining margins.

The latest results also indicate that the refinery’s earnings momentum strengthened considerably in the third quarter, suggesting that the facility is moving beyond its initial commissioning and production ramp-up phase towards more stable commercial operations.

Revenue increased from $13.91 billion at the end of June to $22.48 billion by September, implying third-quarter revenue of approximately $8.57 billion.

Similarly, EBITDA rose from $2.60 billion at the half-year mark to $5.52 billion at the end of September, indicating third-quarter EBITDA of about $2.92 billion.

Net profit also climbed from $1.82 billion at the end of June to $4.73 billion by September, translating into an additional $2.90 billion in earnings during the third quarter alone.

The figures suggest that the refinery’s capacity to generate profits has improved alongside the expansion of its commercial operations, reinforcing its strategic importance to Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry and the wider African energy market.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, David Bird, attributed the performance to higher throughput, improved operational stability and stronger gross refining margins.

“Our third-quarter performance demonstrates the successful transition from commissioning and ramp-up activities to sustainable commercial operations,” Bird said.

“Revenue increased to US$22.5 billion from US$9.2 billion in the corresponding period of 2025, while EBITDA rose to US$5.5 billion from US$627.6 million, reflecting higher throughput, improved operational reliability and stronger gross refining margins.”

Bird said the results validated the strength of the company’s integrated business model and provided a solid foundation for its next phase of growth.

According to him, the company remains focused on expanding its refining capacity, broadening its product portfolio and strengthening its distribution network across African markets under its Vision 2030 growth strategy.

“With our expansion programme already underway, we remain focused on increasing refining capacity and broadening our product portfolio. We will continue to strengthen our distribution network across Africa and support energy security across the continent, while creating long-term value for stakeholders,” he stated.

The financial performance comes as the refinery advances its IPO, which is designed to open up ownership of one of Africa’s most ambitious industrial investments to a wider pool of investors.

The Securities and Exchange Commission recently approved an extension of the offer period from October 13 to October 27, 2026, to accommodate growing investor interest and facilitate wider participation across Africa.

The offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 per share, representing an offering valued at approximately N2.15 trillion.

President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, had disclosed that subscriptions to the offer had exceeded the company’s original fundraising target, explaining that the objective was to enable more Africans to own a stake in the refinery rather than merely raise additional capital.

The latest results provide investors with fresh insight into the company’s earnings capacity, cash generation and financial resilience as they consider participation in the offering.
