Marriage, they say, is a beautiful journey built on love and protection. But for Ghanaian actress Vicky Zugah, what should have been a safe and nurturing relationship turned into a terrifying ordeal.

The actress has shared a painful chapter of her life, recounting how a relationship that was meant to bring joy instead became violent and life-threatening, putting both her and her unborn baby at risk.

Speaking at the launch of “Women of Valour 2026” on February 17, 2026, at the residence of the British High Commission, she recalled an incident that unfolded while she and her then-husband were returning from a funeral to their hotel.

She explained that her ex-partner was driving her car during the trip, but wanted to smoke.

Because she was pregnant at the time, he asked her to take over the steering wheel while he stepped aside.

“Moving from the funeral grounds to the hotel, it was my car and he was driving. At a point, he wanted to smoke, so he asked me to take over because I was pregnant and he couldn’t smoke in the car. I started moving the car, and he asked me to go,” he said.

Then the abuse started, “Immediately we got to the hotel, he started slapping me, saying I had left him. I said, ‘But you asked me to go.’ He replied, ‘How dare you? Or is it because it’s your car?’ Everyone at the hotel came to separate us.”

Vicky Zugah further disclosed that the abuse did not end there. She said her ex-lover went to the extreme of threatening her life and that of her unborn baby, claiming that even if he carried out his threat, authorities in Ghana would not hold him accountable.

“That night, he told me he was going to kill me and kill the baby, and that nothing would happen because this is Ghana’” she stated.

The Women of Valour event, held under the theme “The Pursuit of Fearlessness,” centred on emotional testimonies from abuse survivors, whose lived experiences are shaping this year’s advocacy focus.
