Absa Bank Ghana has held talks with Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams on extending private-sector sponsorship into schools and community programs, positioning the bank as a potential anchor partner in the government’s intensifying campaign to diversify sports financing.

The meeting, between Absa management led by Managing Director Edward Nartey Botchway and the minister, focused on building beyond the bank’s existing portfolio, which includes the annual Absa Run for Life marathon, one of the most prominent mass-participation events on Ghana’s sporting calendar. Botchway described sports as a platform for youth development and social cohesion, and said student-focused initiatives would be a priority area for any expanded engagement.

Adams welcomed the proposal and stressed that early talent identification at school and grassroots level was central to building sustainable national teams and competitive professional leagues. He also outlined plans to redevelop the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra into a modern recreational hub as part of a broader strategy to expand access to sporting spaces and revive community participation.

The Absa discussions arrive at a moment of considerable momentum in Ghana’s sports financing landscape. Adams told Parliament on Thursday that the proposed Ghana Sports Fund, once enacted, would provide a transparent and accountable framework to support infrastructure development, school and grassroots sport, elite athlete preparation, welfare systems and recreation. He also pledged to donate two months of his own salary to the fund effective February 2026, calling on fellow lawmakers and government officials to follow his lead.

The minister had in January inaugurated an 11-member Governing Board for the Ghana Sports Fund, describing the moment as a historic turning point in sports financing and stressing that the fund would correct years of imbalance in which federations and athletes often struggled with inconsistent support. Days later, Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) was appointed as the official collecting bank for the fund after early engagement between the minister and GCB’s leadership.

With Ghana drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia for the 2026 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, Adams has told Parliament that funding will be a key component of the Black Stars’ preparation and that commitment, not legislation alone, would determine the outcome.

Absa also requested closer collaboration with the Sports and Recreation Ministry to secure high-level endorsements for its sponsorship programmes, underscoring a broader appetite among financial institutions to be seen as active partners in Ghana’s sporting ambitions.
