Sifuna’s Surprise Choice of Running Mate That Could Hand Him Victory in 2027
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has drawn attention after meeting Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator Kamau Murango as opposition leaders explore possible partnerships ahead of the 2027 General Election. The engagement has sparked speculation that Maina could emerge as a potential running mate for Sifuna, although no official announcement has confirmed the reports.
The three leaders met at Sifuna’s office on Tuesday, October 13, to exchange views on bringing opposition leaders together and developing a shared political strategy. Following the meeting, Sifuna described Maina and Murango as dependable leaders and said their discussions focused on uniting the country, particularly the opposition, ahead of the next election.
Maina has recently called on opposition politicians seeking the presidency to put aside personal ambitions and agree on one candidate to challenge President William Ruto. She made the appeal on October 3 during the burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, the father of People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua.
During her address, Maina referred to several political figures, including Sifuna, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. She urged the leaders to settle their differences and work towards a common position rather than allowing competing ambitions to weaken their efforts.
The meeting has attracted interest because Maina and Murango are associated with Gachagua’s political camp. Their engagement with Sifuna comes as different opposition figures consider possible partnerships and seek ways to coordinate their activities before the 2027 polls.
Meanwhile, Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement is building its organisational structures as preparations for the election continue. The group recently announced appointments to its communications and publicity teams, including naming Pauline Njoroge as interim head of communications.
Although Maina’s name has surfaced in discussions about a possible running-mate arrangement, Sifuna has not publicly confirmed selecting her for the position. The meeting has nevertheless added a new dimension to conversations about opposition unity and the political alliances that could emerge before the next general election.
