The Sandema Hospital in the Builsa North Municipality successfully delivered preterm twins on New Year Day.
Dr Edwin Saanwie, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sandema, said the deliveries were successful and both babies and mother were in stable conditions and were being monitored closely.
He said the twins, male and female were delivered by midwives at the facility at 0103 and 0110hours respectively at 34 weeks 6days of pregnancy, and each weighed 2.2 Kilograms (Kg).

Dr Saanwie said even though normal pregnancy spanned a 38-week period, the delivery was successful and both mother and babies were doing well.
While in the interview with the GNA on the preterm deliveries, the Medical Superintendent had to immediately truncate the interview and rush to the facility’s theatre for another delivery via Caesarean Section (CS) due to delayed second stage of labour with foetal distress.
After the procedure, he told the GNA that, “We performed an emergency CS and extracted a life female baby with good Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration (APGAR) score. That means when the baby came out, it was able to cry and respond well within the first and the fifth minutes,” the Medical Superintendent explained.
He said the CS female baby delivered at 1224hours, weighing 3.1kg increasing the total delivery for the new year day to three, “Babies are fine and their mothers are also fine.”
Dr Saanwie advised women who missed their menstrual periods to immediately visit any health facility to commence Antenatal Care (ANC) services saying, “The moment you miss your period as a woman within your reproductive age, report to any health facility and start ANC.”
He cautioned expectant mothers against the use of Over The Counter medicines and insisted that they should visit health facilities for proper healthcare service.
“Every pregnant woman should take their routine medications. They should adhere to education on nutrition and having enough rest,” the Medical Superintendent advised.
He thanked management and staff of the Hospital for the successes chalked in 2025 and encouraged them to continue contributing to quality healthcare delivery in the facility and wished them well in the New Year.
The mother of the preterm twins who spoke to the GNA, thanked God for successful deliveries on the first day of the year, and expressed gratitude to staff and management of the Hospital for their hard work.
