“Emelia Publicly Supported The NDC Campaign” – Brako Powers Reacts To Mahama’s Appointment
According to a report by TV3 Ghana on 13th October 2026, Private Legal Practitioner Austin Brako Powers has questioned the appointment of Emelia Agbenyo as Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Brako Powers stated that President John Dramani Mahama need not have appointed her, arguing that she has publicly supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign. He further claimed that she has conducted herself in a manner that raises questions about her credibility in the position.
“The President need not have appointed her because she has publicly supported the NDC campaign and conducted herself in a manner that raises questions about her credibility in the EC position,” he said.
The Electoral Commission is the constitutional body responsible for organising and supervising elections and referenda in Ghana. Because of this role, the neutrality of its leadership is widely regarded as essential to public confidence in the electoral process. Appointments to the Commission have therefore often drawn close scrutiny from political actors, civil society groups and legal experts.
Mr. Brako Powers’ comments add to the debate over how far perceived political affiliation should influence appointments to such sensitive institutions. Critics of such views often argue that every appointee must be judged on competence and performance in office rather than past political leanings. Supporters of the concern maintain that, for a body overseeing elections, the appearance of impartiality is as important as impartiality itself.
The development is the latest in the ongoing national conversation about the independence and credibility of Ghana’s key democratic institutions.
