Chairman Wontumi’s True Condition In Prison Finally Exposed

Private legal practitioner Ken Kuranchie has disclosed that former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, appears to be in good health despite his imprisonment.

Kuranchie made the observation in an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following court proceedings in the ongoing case involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

Describing Wontumi as a longtime friend, the lawyer said he was pleased to see him looking healthy and physically well during their encounter.

According to Kuranchie, Wontumi appeared strong and well-groomed, a condition he considered encouraging given the circumstances of his incarceration.

The development comes as the former NPP regional chairman faces fresh legal challenges over an alleged financial loss involving approximately GH¢30 million in the EXIM Bank case.

Wontumi has pleaded not guilty to five charges connected to the alleged fraudulent acquisition of GH¢14.3 million from the state-owned bank for a proposed large-scale agricultural project.

The charges form part of legal proceedings examining the circumstances surrounding the funds reportedly obtained for the farming venture. Wontumi’s plea means the allegations remain subject to determination by the court.

Separately, the former party executive is serving a 20-year prison sentence reportedly imposed by the Accra High Court on July 20, 2026, following his conviction on six charges associated with illegal mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.

His imprisonment and the subsequent EXIM Bank proceedings have kept him at the centre of public attention, particularly among members and supporters of the NPP.

Kuranchie’s comments offered a personal account of Wontumi’s condition following their meeting, while the legal proceedings against the former regional chairman continue.
