Controversy over Afi Agbenyo’s EC appointment will blow over by next week – NDC’s Ako Gunn

The Acting National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, says the controversy over appointments to the Electoral Commission (EC) will likely subside within a week after the vetting and approval process.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Ako Gunn urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to shift its attention from the debate over the appointments to pressing concerns facing Ghanaians, particularly youth unemployment.

“Because whether we like it or not, in a week this discussion will blow over after the vetting and approval,” he said.

His comments come amid political debate over the suitability of individuals appointed to the EC and concerns about their perceived political affiliations.

Mr Ako Gunn argued that the NPP lacked the moral justification to sustain its objections, citing what he described as the party’s own record on appointments to state institutions.

He said the country risked allowing partisan disputes to overshadow more urgent national priorities.

“But with all this noise from the NPP, we must focus on the youth on the street who are looking for jobs,” he stated.

Mr Ako Gunn also warned against the politicisation of state institutions, saying the country must guard against allowing partisan interests to undermine public confidence in them.

He expressed concern that the political debate could have lasting consequences, even if the immediate controversy eventually fades.

“I have chosen my words carefully because I believe this can happen again. Even if it is 20 or 100 years, inferences will be made,” he said.

He added that political leaders must learn from the current controversy and work towards strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“Going forward, we should seek to prioritise how best we can grow our democracy,” he said.
