“I Was Right All Along “—NDZ Drops Sh0cking Statement on Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Dollars Scandal

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Stands Firm on Phala Phala Scandal Despite ANC Pressure

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has maintained her position on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s controversial Phala Phala farm scandal, standing by her decision to support further investigations into the allegations despite facing criticism from within the African National Congress (ANC).

Dlamini-Zuma attracted attention in December 2022 when she broke ranks with the ANC’s position on a parliamentary report examining the scandal. While the ruling party opposed adopting the report, she supported allowing the findings to proceed for further consideration, placing her among a minority of ANC members who challenged the party leadership.

The controversy dates back to February 2020, when a substantial amount of foreign currency was allegedly stolen from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm in Limpopo. The incident became public in 2022, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the theft, the handling of the money and whether the president had properly reported the crime.

The matter subsequently attracted parliamentary scrutiny after an independent panel led by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo examined whether the allegations warranted further action. The panel concluded that there was a prima facie case requiring consideration, intensifying political pressure on Ramaphosa.

The ANC opposed the adoption of the panel’s report in Parliament in December 2022. However, Dlamini-Zuma maintained that the allegations deserved further examination, despite warnings that members who defied the party’s position could face disciplinary consequences.

Her decision highlighted the tensions between party loyalty and parliamentary accountability, particularly when allegations involve the country’s highest political office.

The controversy resurfaced in May 2026, amid claims that the Constitutional Court had overturned Parliament’s rejection of the report and ordered an impeachment inquiry to proceed. The reported development renewed questions about the handling of the scandal and the need for accountability.

However, the panel’s preliminary findings did not establish Ramaphosa’s guilt. Any further proceedings must follow the applicable legal and parliamentary processes.

Dlamini-Zuma’s position underscores the importance of investigating serious allegations, regardless of the political consequences, while ensuring that conclusions are based on evidence rather than accusations.
