“Who Does Messi Think He Is?” — Former Barcelona President on Lionel Messi
According to a post on X on Tuesday, October 13, Joan Gaspart, the former president of Spanish club Barcelona, has spoken about Lionel Messi and the legend’s departure from Barcelona.
“This must not be forgotten: Barcelona is above Messi. And he better watch out… Who does he think he is?” he said.
“I bet he won’t even come to Barcelona to say goodbye to the fans. No matter who the president is, he should come say goodbye to Barcelona.”
Back in 2021, Lionel Messi wanted to stay at Barcelona, but the club couldn’t renew his contract due to the club’s financial problems and La Liga’s financial regulations.
Joan Laporta said that he hoped Lionel Messi would agree to play for Barcelona for free, despite understanding that it was impossible.
Lionel Messi, after seeing Laporta’s comments, said that the president’s statements hurt him, and that nobody asked him to play for free. Messi felt that Laporta’s comments shifted responsibility away from the club.
The Argentinian left the club in 2021 without a proper goodbye to the fans at Camp Nou because his departure happened before a new season began, but he expressed how sad it was for him to leave the club and addressed its fans in a farewell press conference.
“If he arrives on the day Joan Laporta is no longer the president of Barcelona, I wouldn’t go to that tribute,” Joan Gaspart said.
