Dennis Aboagye calls Emelia Agbenyo dyed-in-the-wool NDC member
NPP Communications Director Dennis Miracles Aboagye has questioned the neutrality of newly appointed Electoral Commission Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo, citing social media posts he claims show her support for John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking about her appointment, Mr Aboagye quoted a post he attributed to Ms Agbenyo endorsing Mr Mahama’s presidential bid.
“A vote for John Mahama is a vote for two competent hands with a right mindset to do what is right by the people of Ghana,” he quoted the post as saying.
He also cited the hashtags “Vote John Mahama 2020” and “Vote for Change 2024”, arguing that the posts demonstrated her political preferences.
“This is the lady that is being sold to us as somebody that can independently steer the affairs of our elections,” he said in an interview on Joy FM.
“A citizen who has openly taken sides. A citizen who has openly declared her support for one group of persons in this country is being sold to us as an independent person.”
Mr Aboagye argued that the alleged public endorsements raised questions about whether Ms Agbenyo could be regarded as politically neutral in her new role overseeing electoral affairs.
His criticism centred on the social media material he presented as evidence, which he said contradicted the expectation that Electoral Commission officials should remain independent of partisan political interests.
