If President Mahama Thinks Our Role Is Not Important, Then He Should Pay Us So We Resign – Salamatu

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) has insisted that its ongoing strike will remain in force until the government addresses its grievances through meaningful negotiations.

National Chairperson Salamatu Braimah expressed the union’s position following remarks by President John Dramani Mahama, which she said had left members disappointed and concerned about how their work is valued within Ghana’s education sector.

Braimah stated that education workers are essential to the effective operation of schools and other educational institutions. She maintained that their contributions should be recognised through respect, fairness and appropriate treatment.

She noted that TEWU had repeatedly attempted to settle its concerns through engagement with government officials and relevant authorities. However, those efforts had failed to produce a satisfactory outcome, making industrial action necessary.

The union chairperson stressed that members would remain on strike until their concerns were properly addressed through direct and constructive discussions. She warned that statements and promises without concrete action would not resolve the impasse.

She also argued that if the government does not appreciate the union’s contribution, it should consider providing adequate compensation to affected workers instead of expecting them to remain in working conditions they consider unacceptable.

TEWU has therefore maintained its decision to continue the industrial action until the government demonstrates a genuine commitment to resolving the dispute through negotiations and practical measures.
