Rajasthan CM Orders Fair Probe into Attar Singh Bhedana’s Death; Hanuman Beniwal Seeks Removal of IG, SP
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has directed the state Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the death of former BJP MLA Attar Singh Bhedana, who was allegedly lynched by a mob in Bharatpur district following a dispute over the resumption of a stone crusher plant.
Meanwhile, Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) president and Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal has demanded the immediate removal of the Bharatpur Range Inspector General (IG) and the district Superintendent of Police (SP), raising questions over the functioning of the police administration and the state’s law-and-order situation.
Sharma spoke to the DGP on Monday to obtain details of the incident and review the situation. According to sources, the Chief Minister also discussed the matter with Minister of State for Home Affairs Jawahar Singh Bedham and directed him to closely monitor developments.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for a comprehensive investigation to establish the facts and ensure appropriate action.
Beniwal, meanwhile, called for accountability and argued that the removal of the two senior police officers was necessary to ensure an impartial investigation.
The RLP chief also referred to allegations by local residents that Bhedana was assaulted following alleged instigation by Bedham. These allegations have not been established and are expected to be examined as part of the investigation.
Police deployment remains heavy in Bhonda village, where tension and an atmosphere of silence have reportedly prevailed since the incident.
A medical board conducted Bhedana’s post-mortem examination at the mortuary of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur on Monday. Following the examination, his family took the body to Pali village in Haryana’s Faridabad district and demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Bhedana’s wife, Kamlesh Bhedana, has lodged a murder complaint against around 80 people, naming several alleged assailants. In her complaint, she stated that she tried to protect her husband during the attack but was pushed aside and assaulted. She also sustained injuries.
The complaint further refers to an earlier incident on September 25, when a group allegedly entered the stone crusher unit, assaulted employees, vandalised the facility and fled. A complaint concerning that incident was lodged at Weir police station on September 27.
The circumstances surrounding Bhedana’s death, including the allegations made by his family and local residents, are expected to be examined by investigators.
Bhedana is survived by a son and four daughters. His youngest daughter, Kiran Bhedana, is an IAS officer from the 2017 batch, while his son, Arjun Singh Bhedana, practises law at the Supreme Court.
His death has triggered grief across political circles and the Bharatpur region, with condolences pouring in from administrative and legal circles.
