Senator John Methu Explains How Gachagua’s US Tour Proves DCP Can Operate Without Him

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has defended the strength of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), arguing that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ongoing United States tour demonstrates that the party can operate effectively without its leader being physically present in the country.

Methu dismissed claims that DCP revolves entirely around Gachagua, insisting that the party has established structures and leaders capable of maintaining its political activities as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Sunday Live programme, the senator said Gachagua’s absence had provided an opportunity for other party officials to demonstrate their leadership abilities and organisational capacity.

According to Methu, DCP has continued holding political rallies, attracting new members and strengthening its presence across different parts of the country despite its leader being thousands of kilometres away.

He maintained that the party was an institution with established principles and structures rather than a political outfit dependent on the decisions and activities of one individual.

The senator expressed confidence that DCP would continue expanding its influence as the next general election approaches, dismissing suggestions that Gachagua’s absence could slow down the party’s political operations.

“Our party is an institution, has structures. Everything that was meant to happen to DCP is happening. We are receiving defectors from many places, we are continuing with our one-term rallies, nothing is stopping,” Methu said.

Gachagua embarked on a 50-day diaspora tour on August 26, 2026, seeking to engage Kenyans living abroad and strengthen support for his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

During the tour, the former Deputy President has held engagements with Kenyans in the diaspora and other groups as he continues promoting his political agenda.

Methu’s remarks come as DCP seeks to establish itself as a major force in the opposition and build a nationwide network capable of competing against President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the next election.

The senator, who has emerged as one of Gachagua’s key allies, has also played a prominent role in the party’s grassroots mobilisation activities.

Despite defending the party’s ability to function independently of its leader’s physical presence, Methu reaffirmed DCP’s commitment to Gachagua’s presidential ambitions.

He stated that the party would continue supporting the former Deputy President as its preferred presidential candidate while remaining committed to the broader opposition’s efforts to agree on a joint flag bearer.

Methu indicated that DCP would still campaign for Gachagua even if the wider opposition coalition failed to select him as its presidential candidate.

His position highlights the balancing act facing opposition parties as they seek to maintain their individual identities while exploring cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

With political realignments expected to intensify in the coming months, DCP’s ability to sustain its activities during Gachagua’s absence could become an important test of its organisational strength and nationwide appeal.
