Dennis Miracles Aboagye Accuses Emelia Agbenyo of Active NDC Partisanship

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly criticised the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, describing it as wrong and unacceptable. He alleges that she is an active partisan operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Aboagye, Agbenyo’s apparent ties to the NDC make her unsuitable for a position that demands strict neutrality and impartiality. He argued that the Electoral Commission must be composed of individuals whose independence is beyond question, and that placing someone he considers an active partisan figure in such a sensitive role undermines the credibility of the institution.

The NPP Communications Director contended that the appointment sends a troubling signal about the Commission’s ability to act fairly. In his view, Ghanaians deserve an electoral body that is genuinely balanced and free from political influence, and any appointment that appears to favour one party over others risks eroding public trust.

He called on those responsible for the appointment to reconsider the decision, warning that it could have serious consequences for confidence in Ghana’s electoral processes. According to him, the issue is not personal but institutional, since the integrity of the Commission depends on the perceived and actual neutrality of its leadership.

Aboagye’s remarks add to the growing debate sparked by the appointment, which has drawn scrutiny from various quarters. Critics have questioned whether the selection process adequately safeguards the Commission’s independence, while supporters of the appointee have yet to respond fully to the allegations.

His statement underscores the intense political sensitivity surrounding electoral appointments in Ghana. For Aboagye, the appointment is wrong on principle, and he insists that the Commission’s credibility must not be compromised by partisan considerations.
