Struggling Manchester United face in-form Atletico Madrid

Desperate for a positive spark to reinvigorate their season, struggling Manchester United will travel to face in-form Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday for matchday two of the Champions League‘s league phase.

Atletico are eyeing a fifth win on the bounce in midweek, while the Red Devils are looking for their first in five games.

Diego Simeone‘s Atleti have enjoyed a strong campaign so far, and after picking up where they left off prior to the international break, they will be confident of success on Tuesday.

Los Rojiblancos overcame 10-man Alaves 2-1 on Saturday.

However, while Atletico will head into this clash on the back of a four-game winning streak, they have only come out on top in two of their last 15 matches against English teams – drawing three and losing 10 – including their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on September 9.

On the other hand, the La Liga club have only lost two of their 19 fixtures when facing English opponents in Spain, winning nine and drawing eight, most recently playing out a 1-1 stalemate with Arsenal in last season’s Champions League semi-final first leg.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick‘s Man United have endured a dire term to date, and it would be a surprise to see them turn it around on Tuesday.

Those searching for hope despite the odds in midweek could look to the Red Devils’ record against Spanish sides, which has seen them lose just one of their last 11, winning seven times and drawing on three occasions.

Galatasaray to make home advantage count as they host Barcelona

Galatasaray welcome Barcelona to RAMS Park on Tuesday night for their second fixture in the 2026-27 Champions League league phase.

The Turkish champions will be looking to respond after losing 3-1 away to Sporting CP in their European opener, while the Spanish champions arrive in Istanbul having beaten Feyenoord 5-1 and maintained their perfect start to the La Liga season.

Galatasaray head into this contest looking to make their home advantage count after a disappointing start to their European campaign.

The atmosphere at RAMS Park could be an important factor, as home form was key to their UCL campaign last season, with home wins over Liverpool and Bodo/Glimt helped secure a spot in the knockout phases where they also beat Juventus and Liverpool (again).

Barcelona, meanwhile, have made an emphatic start to the new campaign, as Hansi Flick‘s side opened their Champions League season by beating Feyenoord and followed that result with a sequence of convincing domestic performances.

The Catalan club also have the upper hand when both teams met in the past in this competition, winning five of their eight previous Champions League meetings with Galatasaray, with two draws and just one defeat.

The visitors also won 2-1 on their last trip to Istanbul when both teams met in the 2021-22 Europa League last 16 after they had played a goalless draw at Camp Nou.

The visitors have scored freely in both the Champions League and La Liga, and their movement across the front line could expose the spaces that the hosts leave when pushing forward.

Arsenal, Lille faceoff in their inaugural meeting

Arsenal‘s inaugural home game of the 2026-27 Champions League campaign also represents the Gunners’ inaugural meeting with Lille, who rock up to the Emirates for Tuesday’s league-phase showdown.

Mikel Arteta‘s side eked out a 1-0 triumph over Napoli on matchday one. Perfect in the Champions League league phase since going down 1-0 to Inter Milan in November 2024, Arsenal’s lucky 13th win in a row arrived in Naples on matchday one, where man of the moment Martin Odegaard made the difference again.

More motivated than ever to finally conquer the continent, Arteta’s men can also lean on a tremendous record of just two losses from their last 31 league phase/group stages games in all UEFA competitions, while also scoring three or more goals in five of their last six home fixtures at this stage.

The reigning Premier League champions also experienced a pleasing return to Emirates soil on Saturday, coming from behind to best Leeds United 2-1 and end the Whites’ unbeaten start to the top-flight campaign.

Arsenal received numerous fitness boosts before kickoff against Leeds, as Declan Rice, Max Dowman, Ezri Konsa and Kai Havertz were all given the green light to play despite withdrawing from their national teams during the break.

With numerous options for change and an impeccable league-phase record over the past 22 months, the Gunners have our full backing to go two for two in Europe.

Inter Milan, Club Brugge seek their first points today

Both seeking their first points in this season’s Champions League, three-time European Cup winners Inter Milan and former finalists Club Brugge will meet on Tuesday evening.

In the first competitive meeting between two famous blue-and-black clubs, the Nerazzurri will welcome the Blauw-Zwart to San Siro.

Runners-up in 2023 and again two years later, Inter only finished 10th in last season’s league phase, then made a humbling knockout exit to Bodo/Glimt.

Aiming for better in 2026-27, Cristian Chivu‘s second campaign began in similar fashion last month: despite dominating possession at the Bernabeu, his side were frequently caught on the break as they lost 2-1 to Real Madrid.

So, the Nerazzurri have been beaten six times in their last seven Champions League fixtures, which represents a real low point in their illustrious continental history.

Having lost both legs to Bodo in last season’s playoff round, then faltered in Madrid, Inter are at risk of losing a club-record four consecutive matches at Europe’s elite level.

Meanwhile, Club Brugge produced one win and four defeats from five away fixtures, eventually crashing out to Atletico Madrid with a 4-1 loss in the Spanish capital.

Before heading to Milan, the Belgian club have also won on just one of their last nine visits to Italy, so precedent is not exactly on their side.

Despite their European woes, Inter still possess Italy’s most potent attack, and even a talented away side cannot hold them at bay for 90-plus minutes.
