ATM vs MNU: Two Manchester United First Team Players Ruled Out Of Atletico Madrid Clash

According to a report by Metro on Monday, October 12, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw will miss the club’s Champions League clash against AtlĂ©tico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils are preparing for a difficult trip to Spain as they look to continue their campaign in Europe’s biggest club competition, but the absence of the two players will be a setback for Carrick, who would have wanted his squad to be in good shape ahead of the important encounter.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Carrick explained that both players picked up injuries during Manchester United’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and have not recovered in time to travel with the rest of the squad.

“They’ve not travelled, they both picked up issues in the game on Saturday [against Spurs] and we were working through that, to see what that looks like. At the moment, they are not ready for the game tomorrow. But we’re not light on numbers, no. Of course, we’ve got a couple of issues with some players missing out but we’re definitely not light on numbers.”

Mainoo’s absence means Manchester United will have to find another option in midfield, while Shaw’s unavailability leaves Carrick without one of his experienced choices in defence for a match that could prove demanding.

Atlético Madrid are known for their organised defending and ability to make life difficult for visiting teams, meaning United will need to be disciplined and take their chances if they want to return home with a positive result.

Despite losing two important players, Carrick remains confident that he has enough options available to compete against the Spanish side, insisting that his squad is not short of numbers.

Manchester United will now hope the available players can rise to the occasion in Madrid, while Mainoo and Shaw work towards returning to action as soon as possible.
