Isabelle Huppert Says She Is Not Afraid of Being Replaced by AI: ‘It’s Still My Face on Screen’
Veteran actress Isabelle Huppert has said she is not afraid of being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), adding that she remains optimistic about the future of human performances on screen.
Known for her work in films such as ‘The Bedroom Window’, ‘Amateur’, ‘I Heart Huckabees’, ‘Louder Than Bombs’ and ‘Greta’, Huppert recently attended the ongoing Busan International Film Festival.
Speaking at a press conference for Marc Fitoussi’s comedy ‘All About Corinne’, which is being screened in the festival’s Gala Presentation section, the actress joked about her limited Korean vocabulary.
“I didn’t know I spoke Korean. I just know how to say ‘annyeonghaseyo’ (hello),” she said.
Addressing concerns about AI potentially replacing actors, Huppert said she had yet to experience the technology threatening her work directly.
“It really is me acting. So I haven’t yet been threatened, confronted with that admittedly grim prospect. So far I’ve seen that it’s still my face on screen, and I hope that continues,” she said.
The actress acknowledged that AI could pose a threat in theory but compared the concerns surrounding the technology to earlier predictions that cinemas would disappear or physical records would become obsolete. She noted that vinyl records had made a comeback despite such fears.
“Maybe I’m wrong to be optimistic, I don’t know,” she added.
Huppert also confirmed that she would appear in an upcoming film by Dario Argento, expressing enthusiasm about the project while indicating that it may take some time to materialise.
“I’m very happy about it. I think it will be some time next year,” she said.
Renowned for her fearless performances and remarkable versatility, Huppert has enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades. She has collaborated with acclaimed filmmakers, including Claude Chabrol, Michael Haneke and Paul Verhoeven.
She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her performance in ‘Elle’ and received an Academy Award nomination for the same film in 2017.
