Meet The kenyan Former Mp Who Lost Wife And Nine Children In One Accident
George Gregory Wilson Nthenge was a prominent Kenyan independence-era politician, businessman, pro-democracy activist, and one of the last surviving veterans of Kenya’s pre-independence Legislative Council (LegCo) and Lancaster House constitutional conferences.
He was born in 1927 in Kisooni village, Machakos County (then part of the larger Machakos District), Nthenge studied at Mang’u High School alongside future President Mwai Kibaki. He became actively involved in Kenya’s push for independence.
He was among the Kenyan leaders who attended the Lancaster House Conferences in London, helping negotiate Kenya’s path to independence. He was involved in drafting Kenya’s first constitution.
He represented Kenya alongside figures like Jomo Kenyatta and others in the push for self-rule.He was elected Member of Parliament multiple times in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. He was elected to Parliament five times overall.
In November 1978 Nthenge was driving his family along the Nairobi-Mombasa Road near Maanzoni/Athi River area in Machakos to ferry them to school in Nairobi.
He was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry. His first wife, Emelda Damaris Mukui and nine children were involved in accident.
The family of 12 people, plus one relative, were traveling to Nairobi in their spacious Peugeot 504 station wagon on a terrible day in 1978.
Nthenge, a driver on the road between Nairobi and Mombasa, chose to go past a truck after the truck driver told him he could. They were getting close to the Athi River Bridge.
He said that another car suddenly appeared and started driving towards him with its high beam lights on.
The politician moved to the right to avoid a truck filled with sand that was coming towards them. Unfortunately, the other driver had the same thought.
When the two vehicles crashed into a hole next to the road, the front axle of the truck was completely broken, causing severe damage to the car.
His four daughters and four sons were immediately killed by the impact, and his wife died while being saved from the collapsed building by rescuers.
One of his kids was moved from the place and later passed away from her injuries.
Luckily, his son only had a broken arm and was able to escape.
When Nthenge woke up, he found out that he had been unconscious and was being taken to the hospital.
The niece of the ex-politician was using a wheelchair. However, six years later, she died because of the impact of her injury.
The politician couldn’t leave the hospital because of his injuries. He had to let his family bury his deceased family members without him, and he was very upset about it.
