Chelsea buoyant as bold summer transfer decision pays off

Chelsea’s decision to sign Jordan Henderson on a free transfer is already proving valuable after his outstanding performance in the 5-1 victory over Bournemouth.

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, 12 October 2026, the experienced midfielder scored twice and provided an assist to help the Blues return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Chelsea entered the international break without a victory in three league matches, including a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brentford. The results had raised questions about Xabi Alonso’s team, particularly their defensive weaknesses.

However, Chelsea responded emphatically against Bournemouth, securing their third league victory of the season and climbing to sixth place in the table.

Henderson, who joined the club in August after mutually terminating his contract at Brentford, was initially expected to play a limited role at Stamford Bridge.

His arrival was widely viewed as an opportunity to strengthen the dressing room with his experience and leadership.

The 36-year-old was named in the starting line-up ahead of Romeo Lavia and repaid Alonso’s faith with two goals, including an impressive free-kick, and an assist.

Chelsea had previously pursued Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka as part of their search for an experienced central midfielder before switching their attention to Henderson.

Morgan Rogers has now praised his teammate’s contribution, dismissing suggestions that the former Liverpool captain’s age would limit his effectiveness.

“People said he was too old and you saw (vs Bournemouth) what he does. Everyone in the dressing room knows what he can do.

“He’s probably still the fittest player at the club to be honest. He’s a machine,” Rogers told reporters after the match.

He added: “People forget about his football because they just think he’s experienced. But the guy can still play football. He’s won everything in the game.”

Rogers also celebrated Henderson’s performance on Instagram, writing: “Dubs at home. @jordanhenderson ageing like fine [glass of wine emoji].”

Henderson’s long-term position in the starting line-up remains uncertain, particularly when Chelsea captain Reece James returns to full fitness. Nevertheless, his display against Bournemouth has strengthened his case for regular involvement.
