Zelensky ‘awaiting details’ from US on Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire claimed by Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that Kyiv is awaiting details from Washington about an energy ceasefire with Russia announced by President Trump, casting uncertainty over an agreement the president claimed had already taken effect.
“Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it’s important for Russia to support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side,” Zelensky wrote on the social platform X.
The Ukrainian leader said he discussed the announcement with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“From our Ukrainian side, there is always FULL support for de-escalation steps, protection of lives, and the necessary decisions to end the war and ensure lasting peace,” he added.
His statement came hours after Trump announced on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure “effective immediately.”
CNN reported that Zelensky was caught off guard by Trump’s announcement and that it came as a surprise, citing a source close to Zelensky. Another Ukrainian official told the outlet, “We just read it as you did.”
Tensions have flared between Trump and Zelensky over the president’s decision to ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports and for Russia to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel following a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky ripped the move on Friday, arguing that it would prolong the more than four-year war between Russia and Ukraine by providing Moscow with additional revenue.
“Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilized world. Russia will ‘repay’ the diesel with further terror and perfidy,” Zelensky wrote on X. “Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged.”
Trump responded to Zelensky’s criticism by suggesting Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal.”
“He wants to make problems for the world,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “He wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers with diesel fuel because Russia supplies a large portion of the diesel fuel throughout the world.”
