From ₦1,500 to ₦500: Tinubu Shares Commuter’s Experience on Masaka-Berger Route
A commuter identified as Blessing has reported paying ₦500 instead of ₦1,500 for her journey from Masaka to Berger in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to a post by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his official X account.
In the post, Tinubu shared a video in which Blessing described the change in her transport fare. The reported reduction amounts to a saving of ₦1,000 per trip.
The President also cited the experiences of Ada and Abigail, who reportedly pay ₦1,600 to travel from Enugu to Nsukka instead of ₦4,000. Their reported savings amount to ₦2,400 per journey.
Tinubu also shared the account of Kabir, a taxi driver who said ₦10,000 worth of compressed natural gas (CNG) allows him to complete three more return trips than drivers using petrol. According to the President’s post, Kabir said he had no intention of returning to petrol.
The post also referenced feedback from Borno, where Tinubu said some commuters pay as little as ₦50 per trip using CNG-powered and electric vehicles.
Tinubu said the experiences reflected the purpose of the government’s investment in alternative-energy transportation: reducing operating costs for drivers and making fares more affordable for passengers.
He acknowledged that removing the petrol subsidy had created financial difficulties for many households, adding that the government had a responsibility to provide practical alternatives to ease transportation costs.
The fare figures and savings cited in the post reflect the individual experiences shared by Tinubu and do not, on their own, establish the cost of transportation across all routes.
