The federal government has formed an 11-member advisory council to assist in running the affairs of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule in the province.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi will perform the provincial government’s duties with the council’s assistance. The council comprises experts from various fields and will advise on public service delivery, administrative transparency and development projects.

According to the notification, former Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Tariq Mahmood Pasha will oversee finance and revenue, while former FBR chairman Dr Muhammad Irshad will look after industry and commerce.

Retired Lieutenant General Nigar Johar Khan, a former surgeon general of the Pakistan Army, has been assigned health. Senator Usman Saifullah Khan will oversee energy, planning and development.

Former caretaker minister Dr Syed Aamir Abdullah will handle education, while former advocate general Aamir Javed will be responsible for law and parliamentary affairs.

Former Awami National Party information secretary Samar Haroon Bilour will oversee information and broadcasting. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s chief cleric, Maulana Muhammad Tayyab Qureshi, will handle auqaf and religious affairs, while former inspector general of prisons Kifayatullah Khan will oversee home affairs and tribal affairs.

Economist Dr Sarfaraz Ali Shah has been assigned minerals, while former caretaker minister Asif Rafiq Afridi will oversee local government, transport and communications.

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar termed the council members as a positive representation of the province. He said its members were technocrats with expertise in their respective fields and described them as the province’s “shining stars”.

Tarar said the appointments had been made strictly on merit and that the members represented the province’s true face.

The advisory council will provide comprehensive advice to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on improving public services, ensuring administrative transparency and advancing development projects across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
