We Hear That In This Gov’t, Those At The Top Are Doing Well, Banks Are Raking In Billions-Onaiyekan

Cardinal John Onaiyekan has expressed worries about Nigeria’s economic situation, pointing out that while ordinary citizens are struggling, those in high government positions seem to be flourishing financially. 

He shared these views during an interview on SYMFONI TV on Friday, October 9, 2026, discussing the effects of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms and the concerns raised by Catholic bishops during their meeting with the President.

Onaiyekan highlighted the disparity between the financial success of powerful individuals and major financial institutions and the hardships faced by many Nigerians, suggesting that not everyone is benefiting from the nation’s economic progress.

In the interview, he remarked, “We hear that in this government, those at the top are doing very well. Actually, we are told that the big banks every year are raking in billions of naira, so for them, this government is wonderful.”

His comments come in light of growing worries over the increasing cost of living and the impact of the Federal Government’s economic policies on households and businesses. Many Nigerians continue to voice concerns about their purchasing power and meeting basic necessities.

The Cardinal’s statements also reflect the issues he and other bishops reportedly conveyed to President Tinubu regarding the limited effects of government reforms on the general populace. They urged the government to consider the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians and the economic challenges they encounter.
