BAT:He Spent 1229 Days In Office And Suddenly Realized Nigerians Are In Pain,And Offering N66-Shaibu

Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the N66-per-litre petrol discount, questioning whether the relief was sufficient to address the hardship faced by Nigerians.

Shaibu made the remarks while speaking about the fuel price reduction during an interview on Mic On Podcast on Saturday, October 10, 2026. He argued that the president had spent 1,229 days in office before suddenly acknowledging the pain Nigerians were experiencing and offering a discount he considered inadequate.

“He has spent 1,229 days in office and he just suddenly realized that Nigerians are in pain and he’s offering N66. Is that what Nigerians are worth? And the N66 is limited,” Shaibu said.

The N66-per-litre discount was introduced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The initiative was designed to provide temporary relief to motorists amid high petrol prices and rising living costs.

However, the discount attracted questions about its accessibility and the extent of relief it provided to Nigerians. Reports indicated that customers needed to use the NNPC mobile application and make digital payments to benefit from the reduction, while motorists paying directly at the pumps were charged the regular price.

Shaibu’s criticism centred on the amount and limited nature of the discount, which he argued did not adequately reflect the financial difficulties Nigerians had experienced amid rising transportation costs and the prices of goods and services.
