Video as Baffour Awuah receives heros welcome at airport after EOCO ‘troubles’
According to report by Ghanaweb on Sunday 11, October 2026, hundreds of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters gathered at Prempeh International Airport in Kumasi to welcome the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, following his recent detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The supporters, dressed in party-branded shirts and waving NPP flags, assembled at the airport to receive the lawmaker upon his arrival in Kumasi. The gathering was marked by chants and celebrations as party faithful expressed their support for the MP amid ongoing legal proceedings involving allegations of financial misconduct.
The reception came shortly after the Accra High Court granted Baffour Awuah bail in the sum of GH₵10 million, with two sureties required as part of the bail conditions. The MP is facing charges brought by state prosecutors, including conspiracy, intentionally causing financial loss to the state and money laundering.
The case centres on a 2020 debt recovery arrangement involving SIC Life, a state-owned insurance company, and the MP’s former law firm. Under the agreement, the firm was reportedly engaged to recover outstanding funds from Equity Savings and Loans. Prosecutors allege that aspects of the legal fees and recovery settlements connected to the transaction resulted in financial loss to the state.
However, the MP’s defence team has rejected allegations of criminal wrongdoing, maintaining that the transactions under investigation arose from legitimate commercial legal engagements. The defence argues that the matters were handled within the scope of professional legal practice.
The proceedings have also drawn attention to questions surrounding the arrest and detention of sitting Members of Parliament and the constitutional protections afforded to lawmakers. In late September 2026, a tense encounter between EOCO officials and parliamentarians at the Accra High Court prompted renewed public discussion about parliamentary privileges, due process and the handling of investigations involving elected representatives.
The case continues to attract public interest as the legal process unfolds. While NPP supporters have demonstrated their backing for the Manhyia South MP, the allegations against him remain subject to determination by the court.
Baffour Awuah is expected to return to the Accra High Court on October 26, 2026, when proceedings are scheduled to continue. The next hearing is expected to provide a further opportunity for the prosecution and defence to present their respective positions as the case moves forward.
Editorial note: Before publication, independently verify the reported bail conditions, charges, court date and details of the SIC Life transaction against reliable sources or official court records. The rewrite preserves the distinction between the prosecution’s allegations and the defence’s response; the charges should not be presented as proven facts.
