Real Madrid Await Decision on Vinícius’ Possible Suspension
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior could miss the upcoming El Clásico against Barcelona after receiving a straight red card in Saturday’s 1-0 LaLiga victory over Villarreal.
The Brazilian was sent off in the 72nd minute following a VAR review that showed him pulling Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba’s hair during the build-up to what would have been his second goal.
The goal was disallowed, leaving Madrid to defend their narrow lead with 10 players.
Vinícius now faces a disciplinary hearing, with Spanish football regulations allowing a suspension of one to three matches for violent conduct involving hair-pulling.
The final punishment will depend on the disciplinary committee’s assessment of the incident and the referee’s report.
Real Madrid are scheduled to face Sevilla before meeting Barcelona on October 25. A suspension covering two or more matches could therefore rule Vinícius out of the highly anticipated clash.
Following the match, the 26-year-old apologised to his teammates and supporters in a social media post.
Madrid have yet to learn the length of his suspension, leaving the club waiting for an official decision as preparations for El Clásico continue.
