Duale Reveals the Economic Risk Kenya Faces as Ebola Fears Grow

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has warned that exaggerated fears about Ebola could harm Kenya’s tourism industry and discourage investors as the government manages the country’s first confirmed imported case.

Speaking during a fundraising event in Garissa County, Duale urged Kenyans to avoid spreading misinformation, saying public alarm could undermine confidence in Kenya as a destination for visitors and businesses.

The Health CS maintained that the confirmed infection was imported and did not, on its own, mean Kenya was experiencing widespread transmission.

His remarks come after health authorities confirmed a case of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease in a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient travelled through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi, where he was isolated and later tested positive. He subsequently died, according to the Ministry of Health.

The government has intensified surveillance and contact tracing while strengthening screening at points of entry. Health officials have also identified facilities for isolation and treatment as part of the response.

Duale has appealed to airlines, tourists and businesses to continue normal operations, arguing that decisions about travel and trade should be guided by verified health information rather than fear.

The situation presents authorities with two responsibilities: containing potential health risks and communicating developments clearly to the public and international partners.

As the response continues, regular updates from health authorities will be important in helping Kenyans understand the situation without either dismissing legitimate concerns or spreading unverified claims.
