Army Detects and Destroys Five Landmines Along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch

The Indian Army has detected and safely destroyed five landmines along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said on Saturday.

According to Army officials, two landmines were detected by a patrol party near the border fence in the Basoni Top area on Saturday morning, while three others had been found in the same area on Friday.

The explosives were subsequently destroyed through controlled explosions by the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad. The operation was completed without causing any damage, officials said.

Forward areas along the LoC contain landmines as part of an anti-infiltration obstacle system designed to prevent unauthorised crossings.

However, heavy rainfall and flooding can displace mines from their original positions, bringing them to the surface or moving them into areas where they may pose a danger. Such displaced explosives are commonly referred to as drift landmines.

Mines that shift from mapped locations can become difficult to detect and pose serious risks to both security personnel and civilians. Their unpredictable movement may leave people unaware of the danger, particularly in remote areas where access to emergency medical care can be limited.

Landmine explosions can cause severe injuries, including extensive tissue damage, fractures and traumatic amputations. Civilians, including children, are particularly vulnerable to such hazards.
