Tamale Journalist Calls For National Apology Day To Former President Akufo-Addo
A journalist from Tamale has called for the establishment of a National Apology Day to honour former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and recognise the contributions he made during his time in office.
The journalist argued that such an occasion would provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the former president’s administration and acknowledge areas where he may have faced unfair criticism or treatment while serving the country.
According to the journalist, public officials often become targets of intense criticism because of the decisions they make, particularly when those decisions have significant economic, political or social consequences. However, he said there should also be room for society to reflect on the achievements and challenges of past leaders after they leave office.
The proposed National Apology Day, he suggested, could serve as a platform for individuals, groups and institutions to express regret over statements or actions that may have unfairly affected Akufo-Addo during his presidency.
The call comes amid continuing public discussions about the legacy of the former president and the performance of his government. Akufo-Addo served as Ghana’s president from January 2017 to January 2025, after winning the 2016 presidential election and securing a second term in 2020.
His administration introduced several major programmes and policies, while also facing criticism over economic difficulties, rising public debt, inflation and other challenges that became particularly prominent in the latter part of his tenure.
The journalist’s proposal has therefore generated discussion about how Ghanaian society evaluates former political leaders once they leave office.
He maintained that criticism remains an important part of democratic accountability but argued that it should be balanced with fairness and recognition of positive contributions.
The proposed day would not necessarily be about declaring the former president beyond criticism, but about encouraging reflection, accountability and reconciliation over the political experiences of his administration.
