Carrick has three obvious lineup changes to make as 4/10 Man Utd duo must be droppedMichel SakrutdreportMichel SakrMichael Carrick has been left with more questions than answers after another under-par display, but dropping Lisandro Martinez should be on the cards.

On Saturday afternoon, the Red Devils shared the spoils with fellow strugglers Tottenham at Old Trafford, but the Londoners were the happier of the two sides due to the circumstances.

Bryan Mbeumo had given United the lead with a clinical finish in the 73rd minute. The result seemed almost secured as Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off a few minutes later. However, Spurs still found an awkward equaliser in the 92nd minute through Dominic Solanke.

Lisandro Martinez & Youri Tielemans had poor outings

For the second game in a row, Martinez emerged as one of the main culprits. While he was unfortunate to score an own goal at Fulham, this time he completely lost his aerial duel against Solanke, allowing the latter to slip behind him and direct the ball home, while Senne Lammens stood still.

In her player ratings for The Sun, Man Utd reporter Katherine Walsh gave the Argentine a 4/10 grade, the lowest alongside Tielemans’.

The Belgian midfielder was wasteful in possession, and as the journalist pointed out, he doesn’t have a clear role in Carrick’s tactical jigsaw, especially alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Amad Diallo fared slightly better, picking up a 5/10 rating, but he still didn’t show enough on his return from a long lay-off. The overall team performance improved following his exit.

While Martinez had a torrid performance, Leny Yoro put up a solid display as he replaced Diogo Dalot at right-back.

Nevertheless, the Portuguese international also had a convincing cameo in the second half, adding energy down the right flank.

Hence, Carrick shouldn’t necessarily choose between the two, as he can simply start Dalot at right-back and bring Yoro back to the original centre-back role.

The young Frenchman can coexist alongside Harry Maguire, who can accomodate him by moving slowly to the left. The duo played side by side on many occasions during Ruben Amorim’s reign.

As for Tielemans, his replacement is extremely obvious, as Carlos Baleba had a solid showing as he made his long-anticipated Man Utd debut off the bench. The Cameroonian proved to be missing piece in Carrick’s midfield.

Finally, Amad should make way for Joshua Zirkzee, who added some flair to the final third upon his introduction. The Dutchman might not be be Carrick’s Cup of Tea, but he’s capable of leading the line, thus allowing Mbeumo to play in his favourite right-wing position.

It remains to be seen if the manager will adopt these changes when United are hosted by Atletico Madrid in Tuesday’s Champions League showdown.
