2027 AFCON Qualifiers: Accra Sports Stadium risks CAF ban over ‘church programme’
The National Sports Authority has reportedly hired out the Accra Sports Stadium for a ‘church programme’ without plans to protect the playing surface of Ghana’s only CAF-approved stadium.
An online video showing preparations for the event has triggered concerns over the condition of the pitch ahead of next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia.
There are fears that the event could leave the playing surface damaged.
A large gathering on the playing surface without adequate protection could expose the grass to damage from foot traffic, temporary structures and other event-related activities.
If the facility fails to meet the CAF requirements during an inspection, Ghana could face difficulties using the stadium for international matches.
In 2024, Ghana had to seek alternative venues after the continent’s football governing body banned the Baba Yara (in Kumasi) & the Accra Sports Stadia and from hosting international matches due to its poor condition, prompting Ghana to seek alternative venues.
For now, the extent of any potential damage remains unclear, and the video alone does not establish whether the playing surface has already been harmed.
