NAF bombards terrorist hideout in Kaduna, foils emerging threat at Rijana Hill
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out an airstrike on suspected terrorist positions at Rijana Hill in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State after receiving intelligence about the movement of armed criminals in the area.
The operation was carried out on Friday by the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 1 using an A-29 Super Tucano aircraft.
Military authorities said the mission followed intelligence reports that an unknown number of suspected terrorists had gathered at Rijana Hill, posing a possible security threat.
Before the strike, the aircraft had escorted a convoy conveying the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 1 Division, Nigerian Army, and the Air Component Commander from Kaduna to Maraban Rido.
During the escort mission, the crew maintained aerial surveillance and monitored the route for possible threats but found the journey to be safe.
After completing the escort assignment, the aircraft was immediately redirected to Rijana Hill following fresh intelligence about the suspected terrorists.
According to the operational report, the aircrew spotted the suspected armed men, who attempted to flee and hide after noticing the aircraft overhead.
The fighter aircraft then engaged the identified positions with its onboard weapons before carrying out another scan of the area to check for any remaining threats.
No additional suspicious activity was observed during the follow-up surveillance, and the aircraft later returned safely to base.
The military, however, did not disclose the number of suspected terrorists killed or injured during the operation.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA is one of the ongoing military operations aimed at tackling terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes in parts of northern Nigeria. Air operations are regularly combined with ground missions to disrupt criminal hideouts, protect troops and improve security in affected communities.
The Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA said it would continue to work closely with other security agencies to sustain pressure on terrorist groups, protect lives and property, and support efforts to restore lasting peace and stability across the operational area.
